"International students will be able to work off-campus for up to 24 hours per week," announced Immigration Minister Marc Miller.

The government has revoked the 20-hour work limit for international students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This new regulation was established on April 29, 2024, and is set to take effect from September 2024.

The federal government has implemented the new limit to curb the continuous influx of international students across the country.

International students can work unlimited hours when not actively enrolled in class, such as during the summer.

Critics caution that allowing international students to work full-time could turn a study permit into an unofficial work visa.

The federal government states that international students are requesting to work more in order to pay for their studies.

Miller stated that the government is setting the cap at 24 hours to allow students to work three entire eight-hour shifts a week.

Miller also discarded the previous idea of setting a 30-hour cap per week, saying that would be too close to full-time hours.

The work hours limit will be 20 hours per week until the government can implement a permanent change to make it 24 hours.
